Stoked to announce that Variant has co-led Farworld Labs’ pre-seed round

It’s no secret that we’re fans of the Farcaster ecosystem. We’ve been on the lookout for teams that are:
- Growing the pie by appealing to new users
- Thoughtfully leveraging headless distribution
- Exploring ways to make the net-new data types (frames, tokens) first-class citizens

Enter: Farworld Labs

Farworld Labs is building the go-to place for developers to get distribution and for users to have fun. They’re starting with two products:

1. Farworld – an interactive Pokemon-esque battle game that leverages Farcaster’s open social graph 

2. Farcade – a new client on Farcaster, optimized for social / casual games

That’s why the team is also building Farcade 

For developers, Farcade will be the best place to distribute and customize social-based apps. Many of the features will enable developers to more easily retain and re-engage their users

For consumers, Farcade will simply be the most fun place to play games with your friends

I’ve previously written about the opportunity for frame-oriented clients: interacting with a mini-app (frame) is distinct from consuming ephemeral microcontent. The former requires an entirely distinct UI

When I first learned about Farcade, I knew this was what we had been looking for

The beauty is that developers can still build once and distribute everywhere. Think: Zynga building on a persistently open Facebook, combined with a Steam-like client for distribution and discovery

The cherry on top is the underlying crypto rails: seamless commerce, verifiable identity, true player ownership, and the ability to compose in-game assets from one app to another

The Farworld Labs team is awesome. Founded by brothers Bobby and Charlie Blackstock, they have a history of building at the bleeding edge of new technology

Both have been in crypto for 6+ years: @chuckstock was an early engineer at ShapeShift, while @blackstock founded Coinvantage (which was then acquired by Kraken). They also bring deep gaming experience from prior startups and as gamers themselves

I’ve been playing for the past month – mostly by training my in-game creatures through Farworld’s feed-based training frames. It’s been a lot of fun, but has also highlighted some big opportunities for a client to innovate
