The two must diverge at least sometimes!

Why did they lose? Because they failed to conform to my preferences. They did stuff I hate. Had they conformed to my preferences, and did everything I like, they would have surely won.

As a feminist, there are many cases like this. In politics in general, sometimes you have to resort to conflict to win. And sometimes, someone resorts to violence. I'm against violence, but e.g. The Korean girls insulting men on the Internet were kind of necessary, so I support them, and also because I have to support all feminists, we have to support all women, even if they're not perfect. But it goes against my values. I would have preferred not to support it. Same for allies: in France we had to gather against the far right, and the political result was very odd. 

Well, to sum up: political conflict creates this kind of situation all the time.
