Thoughts? Seems logical to me. It’s just too bad “protect women” in modern times often looks more like “control women”, and limit women’s access to education, opportunities, and reproductive choice 😕 https://x.com/waitbutwhy/status/1753189923497107735?s=46&t=NL3QJzRfwEGFccYAB1_vMA

Never in my five years of psych degree have I learned something like this 😂 You hit the nail on the head. People use ancient evolution as a scapegoat to justify behaviour today. We need guns because we’re hardwired for danger Women should be homemakers because it’s hardwired into us etc.

I feel like I rarely see anyone using women's well-being as a reason to do anything 😂 I usually hesitate whenever people use children's welfare as the defense or reason for policies etc (at least in the US). It feels emotionally manipulative, possibly for the reasons outlined in the tweet

Survival is one thing, protection is another. Women have survived alongside men, as hunters and warriors, not just domesticated homemakers. What do women need protection from? Men. I am more inclined to believe protection came for women as property. Pass your sperm on and defend your property.

Weird that the rate of violence against women is so high if men are hardwired to “protect women”…

From evo psych pov the desire to seek out high calorie foods is also hardwired into me bc hunter gatherers lived in food scarcity. Technology rendered this void and now I must adapt or die Just because we are hardwired for x does not mean it serves us today. Men are not disposable and women don’t need to be shielded

I always dislike when the news report still add in ‘many of those killed were women & children’. I get the children but by adding women in it exacerbates this idea that we are helpless, or ‘need saving’ . I always wonder how men feel as if their deaths are less important. Esp when many more of them die.

I don't see men doing this as the urge to protect women and children, I see men "protecting" women as fabricating an excuse to fight other men. My thought there is purely anecdotal though, but I have the feeling this tweet is too.

This is wrong, unfortunately, he's not an evolutionary psychologist. We are wired to be social and form bonds with others, and rescue others if those bonds are threatened, but there isn't some special wiring specifically for males to protect females and children.
