This job posting to be one of the first lecturers at the Network School is giving me all kinds of feelings. 😩😫😫😫😩 I’m seeing it while I happen to be taking my daughter to visit colleges today so it’s hitting extra hard. While I try to formulate my thoughts, check it out and let me know what you think https://jobs.ns.com/33918

Feeling one: When I first heard Balaji speak about network states, I just immediately understood it. It reinforced some things I had already begun to understand, particularly about skills over credentials. I didn’t grow up with a lot of money. I went to an in state school and paid in state tuition. I chose engineering because it was practical and I knew I could get a high paying job after graduating. And I was right - I was one of the first of my friends to be hired and I had the highest paying job in year 1. My husband took a different path- elite university and MBA, Wall Street finance path and hedge fund (with a nice stint as Web 1.0 startup founder). We both had success in our careers. I looked at the doors that opened for him because of his network. He looked at my “hard skills” and the ROI of my education. I’d love to believe skills over credentials is all that matters, but the value of your network (which is often intertwined with said credential) cannot be ignored

Feeling two: As many of you know, I’m in the stage of life where my kids are teenagers and deciding where to go to college. I’ve been vocally critical of universities, particularly how the rankings and competitiveness affects how (mostly affluent) parents and teenagers live their lives. They aren’t trying to build resilient, gritty, naturally curious, critical thinkers prepared for the future. They are playing a zero sum game of get into the best college by spending tens of thousands of dollars on tutors and counselors and choosing the extracurricular activities not that they enjoy but that will give them an edge on an application. When I talk to parents of teenagers in my community all they want to talk about is college. I find it all so boring and tedious. But across the internet network, I’ve found other parents like me.

Feeling 3: The type of person they’re looking for- it’s me 👋 1) We’re seeking people from everywhere, because we’re internationalists. 2)We’re investing in the best candidates, because we’re capitalists 3) We’re focusing initially on STEM, because we’re technologists 4) But we also want to train independent creators in every field from history to philosophy, because we’re humanists

I could see that from what I know of you. What are your first 2 topics? It does seem like a lot of time in Singapore though, no? It doesn't seem like just a week or two here or there.

@adrienne as a young woman well in her 30s now haha coming from developing countries and had the ability to learn and study abroad I would say, the best thing that an 18 yr old can do is travel the world. Go volunteering or work part time in some area of the world where they don’t know. Is the best on hands experience, kind of two year gap before deciding to get to university and get a loan. My parents mentality before was getting into good uni and then getting into a great job. Now those times are over, the question should not be how to be a good employer and wait for the pension. They can figure out later on what uni they will go, or even if they don’t go is fine. Let them follow their own curiosity without the pressure of anything!
