Do women apologize too much? 

A mentor of mine once suggested subtle ways to stop apologizing.  Instead of  "Sorry I'm late", she told me to use ️"Thank you for your patience".

I try not to overthink it and there's probably a balance to strike.

definitely -- I can not even count the number of times that someone has bumped into me and I've said "sorry" -- why, I do not know

100% yes. I catch myself apologizing for things that there is absolutely no need to apologize for. 

You were in my way and bumped me? I’m saying sorry 🫠

You say it’s okay for me to do something & I do it but feel I’ve inconvenienced you? Profusely apologizing 🫣

Yes they do. Because we’re primed to be people pleasers 🙄

Same.  I like being conscious of it but to think we can never apologize is absurd! 😂

I had a mentor of mine tell me that too so I've been more mindful of it. However if I'm late, I feel the need to say sorry since saying thank you for your patience doesn't seem to acknowledge how I feel about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I was doing diversity and inclusion research and advocacy (back when I was the most senior woman in a 1000 person engineering org) one of my biggest a-ha learnings was how much the “woman” experience was felt by so many men. Definitely opened my eyes and expanded my brain 💜💜

Sorry, some men do too.

(I had to consciously re-train myself to switch out "sorry" for "pardon me" for a ton of just daily bumping around the world interactions).

Apologies, I know this on the female-gender agreeability take - but boy, those big-five personality types can be equal opportunity cripplers!

I wrote about this a while ago and think about it so often! I also notice myself saying “sorry” instead of “excuse me” 🤦‍♀️

Wow, phenomenal writing, Marisa. What’s crazy is as I read along, I could hear myself reacting the same way and not even realizing how wrong saying “No, sorry” is.  Being polite is so ingrained in me. 😖 Awareness is the first step to change, thx for writing and sharing this. 🫶

I know this tip but it is SO hard to implement when the people pleasing instincts kick in.

😆 So I've been intentionally adding "I think" into a lot of my farcastHER posts because it creates an invitation for someone to disagree.  This is one arena I don't want to appear authoritative in, I want to invite other view points. At work, I remove the "I thinks" where a more authoritative tone will help

Not apologizing, but seems related. 

A few years ago caught myself always staring a sentence with “I think…”, “it seems to me…”, “I assume…”. 

In reality I knew exactly what I was talking about. Still working on this
