Why did this data breach happen? “A cybercriminal accessed our computer system without our permission.” 🤣🤣🤣 I got this in the mail from a health services company. This is so disingenuous and such a poor answer with zero accountability. I like the “5 ways” method of root cause analysis. When something goes wrong ask why. And then with each answer, ask why until you go 5 levels down. You will be closer to the truth.

A lot of legacy companies are poorly equipped to handle cybersecurity. Just thinking about the potential hack involving guessing admin credentials as: User: admin PW: admin 🤦♀️

The amount of breaches in health care in the US has reached all time highs and attacks basically started happening after 2021 in much greater quantities most likely due to shifts in policies from US and Russia in regard to Ukraine. Majority of health care organizations in the US have not taken security seriously enough or invested enough resources in security. Major healthcare vendors are also to blame for not moving towards more secure protocols sooner (they will point at the FDA). The lack of accountability is especially troubling in this example. The why all comes down to not spending resources to secure the environment from serious threat actors.
