Is it really true that in order to understand something, a person must experience a catastrophe, pain, poverty, the proximity of death? Almost no one thinks about death until it comes close to them. The tragedy and at the same time the irony lies in the fact that all people on earth, from the dictator to the last beggar, behave as if they will live forever. If we constantly lived with the awareness of the inevitability of death, we would be more humane and merciful.
