Did you know? 🤍 The origins of Halloween date back more than 3,000 years ago, according to Oxford University, when the Celtic peoples of Europe celebrated their new year, called Samhain, on what we now consider November 1. On the eve of this Gaelic harvest festival, Samhain - what we know as Halloween - spirits were believed to walk the Earth as they traveled to the afterlife, along with other creatures, such as fairies and demons. This ritual served to bid farewell to the Sun God and welcome the short nights. According to the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, in addition to sacrificing animals to the gods and gathering around bonfires, the Celts wore costumes to confuse the spirits. In a primitive form of trick-or-treating, it is believed that Celts disguised as spirits went from house to house fooling around in exchange for food and drink. This practice may have come from the custom of leaving food and drink on doorsteps as offerings to supernatural beings.
