for social apps, is there anything lighter than giving "likes-equivalent"? if there is nothing, what could be a good feeling to design around for the interaction btw viewing and like (+1, I feel you, etc)? view < ??? < like < comment < bookmark

Honestly, why isn’t the heart by default a: +1 icon.. Something about +1 feels more universal to me..

Do we need anything for a like? For a user, what difference does it make? For the creator, it sure is a signal- but a weak one. We don’t need a light signal. It is more work for everyone - dev, creator and user without significant benefits.

I feel that “like” has lost all meaning - it’s just an atomic unit of dopamine now. I’m not sure people are consciously thinking that they like something when they tap the button.

I really like how Glass is doing it! They call it an “appreciation “ and it’s by default private. Only the user who’s giving know who gets it; only the user getting knows who it’s come from. I’ve been on Glass since they launched. Love it. https://glass.photo

I think it depends on what you’re trying to convey. You could mark views automatically (“impressions”) but those just indicate that people have seen your post. The next step is an indication of what they thought of that post which can come in the form of (dis)likes or more broadly reactions.

Engagement? Not sure what your goal is here, but there are measurable actions between view and like that indicate interest (ex. expand / view comments / play video / enable sound / click link, etc…)

at the end of the tokenization idea maze, i feel we're going to get a new social unit in the form of a token. a new primitive may arise from "social tokens" and will probably happen when micropayments (<$0.01) get integrated into social networks. also, karma is another form. similar to likes, but reputational.

Alternative could be to design a “heavier” equivalent so that the ‘like’ button de facto becomes the lighter version.

i read "likes" as i feel you and bookmark given the context. maybe just a way to show that somebody "bookmarked" your posts?

I keep being drawn to something of a point, though 👆 can feel too approving. Maybe 🫵? The idea being ‘look’ or ‘hey, that’ but not committing to a positive sentiment. I often don’t ‘like’ stuff because, well, I don’t like it. But think it otherwise worth highlighting.

Interesting! Not sure it will help or hurt to have too many options for interaction. Have thought about > bookmark relations though - as viewed from Social Identity or WoT relations in BrightID with focus on determining unique human - or sybil resistance.

Good insight from Lee Byron that the like can only be given once per post. So there’s friction in giving feedback beyond that single like. Do you have to go all the way to a comment? https://leebyron.com/snack-driven-development/

In the context of p2p: - A “post” is a `ping` - A “view” is an unopinionated `pong` - A “like” is an opinionated `pong`; find peers - A “comment” is a `handshake` - `Subscribe` to peers is a “follow” - `Process` peer events is a “repost” / “bookmark” Idk if a step b/w views & likes is neede
