Major media does call Trump a fascist tho.. Can point to examples from CNN, NYT & MSNBC just in the past few weeks.

I think the problem is not that the "fascist" label is too extreme. It's that people have a lot more associations with "communist"/"socialist" (as a common presence throughout the cold war) than they do with fascism. Any associations they do have with fascism (Hitler, Mussolini) seem to be too remote to apply.
