The best argument put forward for why automation and AI would not cause mass unemployment (and, therefore, a potential Great Depression or economic collapse) is that, in previous instances when new technology replaced labor, people simply found new kinds of jobs.

And this is the strongest argument available. But can you imagine applying the same logic to other technological advancements? For example: “Because no previous technology allowed us to send people to the moon, rockets wouldn’t either.” Or: “Because previous advancements in weaponry never led to the world’s destruction, thermonuclear weapons won’t either.”

We simply never had to deal with exponential technology replacing labor at an accelerating pace, so there is no guarantee that our current economic paradigm can sustain it. This doesn't mean we need to be alarmists, but we do need to take the issue much more seriously.

Independent journalism doesn't exist today. I don’t say that to disparage journalists – many of whom are people of the highest integrity – but rather to say that there is no business model today where the economic interests of journalists are aligned with the interests of the public.

If journalists rely on advertising or subscriptions they have an economic interest to report what is popular over what is true. If they're govt funded they may be suspected of promoting a political agenda. If they're sponsored by philanthropy or business tycoons, whose interests are they really promoting? Even if they're backed by small donors, can the public really trust that these are not a front for some interest group (a la "Citizens for XYZ")?

If we want a truly independent media – media that is resistant to ideological capture, to the influence of perverse incentives and interests groups – we need to start from a business model rooted in credibly neutral institutions. For that we need Network Economies.
