Is there a name for the type of government where the government pursues consumer protection, antitrust, etc policy by directly running one competitor in every important industry, instead of making rules for every participant?

Is the idea here that the government forces the private industry to compete with more integrity?

Or it at least sets the bar of what the minimum for that industry should be

Right. I don’t hate the idea. Although, I would just prefer a government that helps industries transition or transform into new ones (gas to electric). Creating a governmental competitor might anchor a particular industry in a given solution, which might actually drag things backwards.

Yeah I think things like medical supplies, roadwork/construction, insurance make sense to be “crown corporations” as we call them in Canada because these are all situations where the work would be better done in-house due to savings by better quality etc. But otherwise just help fund innovation as you say.

Yah. I like that. A big problem I feel we have in America is what happens with airlines, telcos, gas companies, etc where the government allows the prop up of duopolies etc which hold back innovation and cause terrible user experiences for the consumer.
