the rise of social media between 2005 and 2015 happened to coincide with the strongest wave of data-driven "optimization" of prices, wages, and opportunities in general. we went from enabling outlier wins on top of an average improvement of life quality over time, to requiring being an outlier to win. very quickly society allowed itself to default to maximum-acceptable-extraction. this is the "squeeze" you hear people mention. social platforms are part of this machinery but they're not the root cause. the root cause is digital transformation enabling gov & biz to arb trade smaller and smaller economic units. will only get worse as AI is integrated into more of daily life and enforces conventions biased to benefit its controller. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/17/health/surgeon-general-social-media-warning-label.html
