Exploring Bluesky has been good. It reminded me the tech-optimist leftist bubble I've been in. The AI hatred among the left (yes, it's not just the libs) is insane. There are meaningful conversations to have around consent, scabbing, unemployment, social upheaval. It's coming and we will HAVE TO talk about these eventually. But instead, the left is abandoning reality and leaving it to the right to shape the narrative.

The lack of imagination around AI and crypto from fellow libs/leftists is shocking at times. It’s self-defeating, too. These things will materially impact the world. So often people seem content to make a value judgement as if that’s enough to critically engage with these things

I don't mind value-judgment but they can at least do it based on some level of reality. Most leftists are idealists (I myself am too) but gotta keep some foot on the ground too.

One foot on the ground for me is acknowledging that technology is here to stay, and recognizing that in order to make it ultimately serve the interests of people we need to begin imagining possibilities. From personal experience engaging with my everyday lib/left friends, there is a passive but strong degrowth, luddite, primitivist disposition that proceeds from a flippant (in my mind) value judgement that technology is net-bad for the world. It's yuck and cringe to hyperstition and meme about what seems like remote futures. My experience online is much different, of course, hence why I gravitate to platforms like this.
