Think I’m out on personal channels

Not much reason to cast in them vs. to your home feed (followers) unless you’re really leaning into building a community around your personal brand (most people aren’t)

I do enjoy the lens of them being like a Facebook wall where friends can post “to” you (a bit different than tagging you) but don’t think that’s enough of a benefit on its own

That's an interesting take. Personal channels do seem niche unless you're dedicated to a specific community or personal brand. For most, the home feed feels simpler and more impactful. The Facebook wall analogy is cool, but I agree, it's not a strong enough reason on its own.
