what's the state of the art pattern for allowing holders of an nft on mainnet to mint an nft on L2? just merkleized snapshots?

anything conceptually wrong with an OP stack chain committing state roots to Optimism mainnet (or another L2) rather than eth mainnet? presumably the resulting gas costs would be pretty trivial?
