every openai breakthrough gets replicated in opensource so quickly. are there other industries where this happens? what's unique about ai research?

would imagine same would happen in cryptography/crypto industry overall but things are just oss by nature so we don't recognize it much open/decentralized + large amounts of capital ai is similar, but starts private/centralized and then a sufficient amount of capital creates open versions

It’s very difficult to be unique and AI. I don’t think this is actually going to happen. The only thing that is unique is the data upon which they are training. That is the distinction.

Like software, it’s hard to build but cheap to copy. Unlike normal software; the thing you are building can be used to improve the thing you are building. With open source trends and access to closed source models over API, it’s a network effect where small islands of gains quickly ripple out to all participants
