In this story from the collection "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio" by Pu Songling, a young scholar named Wang Sheng encounters a beautiful woman who claims to have been forced into hiding by evil people. Wang Sheng is moved by her beauty and decides to take her in.
However, Wang Sheng's wife is suspicious of the woman and feels that she is not human. Wang Sheng dismisses his wife's concerns and continues to pamper the woman. One morning, Wang Sheng accidentally wakes up early and sees the woman changing her face through a crack in the door. He discovers that she is actually a demon who uses a painted face to disguise herself as a human.
