No shade towards the Network School but it was announced one month away, that probably excludes 95% of potential applicants. Over indexes those who can drop everything and travel to a remote island, independently wealthy types. By design?

@balajis.eth mentions Indian engineers, African coders, Chinese liberals and Latin American libertarians. Can these folks drop their jobs for an eight week sabbatical? One month out?

+1 i'm also disappointed that it's being marketed as being on an island "near singapore" when it's literally in johor (a part of malaysia, the country next to it but no mention of)

I have my own issues with this vision, but in fairness to Balaji, he does single out who this is for and recognizes you have to have some savings to make it work. There’s also a remote option, so not everyone has to make the pilgrimage to the HQ

To play devil’s advocate, it means if you drop everything and you’re not wealthy, you’re very committed and will be networking with people are wealthy and have a level of conviction in the area you’re interested in. Maybe a good mix for an initial trial run which is what v1 of anything is.

I think one of the unanswered challenges of Network States is how families can participate... otherwise these things are at risk of looking like a SF Tech Meetup. I get the theory on how families can participate (more innovative schools with less gov regulation) but the early stuff that has rolled out, including Prospera, does not give me confidence.

It's laughably inaccessible and maybe even perverse. God forbid you have a family or kids or pets 😆 and for $2k a month you may as well live in Singapore proper. Not convinced that there will be a rigorous curriculum either, sounds more like a sleep-away camp for rich people.

I was very confused by this. Pitching people to relocate to an island off the coast of Singapore with less than a month’s notice? Sure, I decided one day to move to Puerto Rico and then made the actual move two weeks later But assembling an entire residential community worth of people in a month? Surely there must be a lot of people that have signed up beforehand
