Getting old is lonely. We’re in an increasingly atomized world, birthdates down etc. etc. Always seemed like a blind-spot in the life extension movement. What does this chart look like if people live to 150?

I think there's a good answer to this: pretty much all actually-existing life extension strategies work by improving your health long before you become susceptible to diseases. So all of your extra years will likely be good-health years, and you'll be able to socialize as much as you can when you're ~40

Also - More minutes alone does not always equate to loneliness. ~8 hours alone during the day could be fine for many people if they have ~2-3 hours of interaction. I think there is likely some human interaction with caregivers or community members and similar other categories not accounted for in there too.

It only works if quality of life continues at a higher level too.

This chart is fascinating and a bit sad. I do wonder what an overlay would look like of responses to: “Yes or No: I feel lonely today”. Basically looking at correlation between being physically alone and feeling alone over time. My guess is it’d look fairly similar but still curious to see

The sacrifice in time with friends and family for work and relationship hits hard. Always gotta balance the search for fulfillment with the appreciation of what you’ve already attained

I’m assuming this is all time spent *physically* with someone I would argue FaceTime would count as being “with” someone

Loneliness has been judged as a bigger killer than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/priorities/connection/index.html?utm_source=osg_social&utm_medium=osg_social&utm_campaign=osg_sg_gov_vm Men in particular suffer.

I would rather find out what it’s like to be dead than what it’s like to be lonely at 150y/o

The dip at the end of the “with partner” plot moves me. Probably due to comparative average lifespans between hetero couples. Hold ‘em close while you got ‘em, folks.

Does being alone means no physical interactions or no interactions at all? If I’m alone in my house but socializing on the internet, does it count as being alone?

I’d argue it’s not lonely at all to get older, I just get more certain about who I don’t want to be around

Well, this chart could look 👀 better if people live active lives longer Whether to 150 or 250 is not that important. One thing to consider though -> may we adapt as species to virtual connections instead of IRL ones?

If everyone fits this chart, each person is algorithmically alone anyway. In fact, being social all the time, being able to be, that's basically the equivalent of being healthy. Perhaps after the age of 40, perhaps at an earlier age, it may be healthier to take care of the quality of the social environment.
