clients want to win and avoid being dependent on the protocol.

this ecosystem is utopia if you accept you’re only building niche products for niche audiences. that’s the source of diversity.

and then you realize that most of these niche products make for great features that can be replicated in the dominant social product.

client diversity (beyond remaking twitter/reddit) is prolly the way to more +sum 'competition' 

not entirely sure what that looks like yet, but further raises my intuition that a fc client may be 'best' used for just porting networks into niche products

@dwr.eth how do you plan to address diverging incentives between the venture funded Warpcast client team and the Farcaster protocol development team (w a current large overlap)

Warpcast employees benefit from equity, but Farcaster protocol devs don’t have a native token

Have you written on this tension before?

The break in case of emergency (which doesn't exist in web2) is the Farcaster onchain contracts and Hubs are open source and forkable.

I get where you're coming from and I have similar feelings. I need to spend some time collecting my thoughts and I'll probably share them soon.

1/ How will Farcaster succeed if apps have to compete with Warpcast?

If there are enough daily active users of the protocol and the underlying data and APIs are actually permissionless, people will build new and interesting apps.

This has been the plan since the beginning (channels being a new thing along the way).

say you're able to grow qDAU and successfully empower other clients (hypothetically).

another client (a non twitter clone) achieves escape velocity user growth, far exceeding any other on the protocol.

why wouldn't they fork farcaster? they could presumably achieve consensus of the new thing with enough scale.

This isn’t specific to just fc.   It’s the same issue for every protocol.

the primary value of farcaster has always been the top-tier community.

it's close to impossible for any alternative decentralized network to beat the engineering of a smart contract blockchain, which has network host economics integrated.

but whatever happens to farcaster, it will have been a value-add.

The true value is in the open data and APIs

Clients are just scratching the surface of what is possible with such data available to the public for building

All of that data, no paywalls to get it, no paper-pushing to facilitate interoperable experiences with it

I hear “I’m bearish on clients, how do they beat WC?” All the time

There is no used and useful protocol without a dominant Twitter-clone Warpcast.

Imagine the internet if Twitter and Facebook’s APIs had stayed open - there’d be so many more social games, social music, etc.

A much richer, more fun, and social internet is ahead.

that's the strategy for the next wave of growth and will shift for over time and there's an element of trust you'd have to place in the team to believe this

dwr said a while ago that he wants warpcast to cater 50% of the farcaster audience in the long term, but building a client is significantly easier than building a protocol. So I don't see clients or clout as zero sum, although its been poorly distributed in a safe manner (which is a business move not a social move)

Hm, I think this changes when messaging is at the protocol level. But definitely feel it's poor form and self-sabotage not to prioritize that.
