I agree with a lot here. My question is what can the political left (which is losing in almost all western democracies now) do to create a compelling counter-narrative to right-wing populism? This election was easily winnable if the democrats had run a competent campaign and also contemplated on some wildly unpopular positions. 

We need a strong political left for  healthy and balanced political democracies, but their current portfolio of ideas just is simply not resonating with voters in so many western nations.

the vast majority of modern western democracies had some tik-tok between left and right wing parties governing. There are exceptions but I struggle to see a healthy democracy with just one side being represented.

It's a fallacy that we need a strong left or right for balance. We need parties interested in democratic governance. That is not the Republican party.
